About Us

BFS is a small film society dedicated to showing diverse films that are old and new that you would not normally see at your average multiplex cinema.

BFS was formed in 1959 by a small band of enthusiasts to satisfy the need for films both old and new, that were unlikely to have been seen in the public cinema by the influx of new residents into Bracknell new town. For many years these were shown in local halls to audiences of upwards of a hundred members and guests.

In 1973 South Hill Park arts centre opened with its own small cinema. Partnering with the art centre in January 1981, the Society selected one film a month to be shown at the South Hill Park cinema, open to both members and the general public.

Since then the society has been self funding but continues to relish the challenge of trying to screen films that we feel merit showing but don't typically have a wide audience and to date our choices have been extremely successful, included regular sold-out performances!

Along with showing films the society have started the successful South Hill Park Dementia Screenings, special events are shown regularly and recently the BFS celebrated our 60th Anniversary with a festival of cinema showing a diverse mix of films that the society is renowned for over the past 60 years.
